Not a bad idea. Phantom users for social media sites. Critical mass is just soooo hard to achieve with all the competition for eyeballs.

I wonder why Dell and software manufacturers like Microsoft don't give discounts based on the number of social sites buyers are members of. I'm sure new social media sites would be happy to pay a dollar or so for new members.

Maybe like new dating sites they create an army of phantom users. Hey, what a great business idea? An army of phantom people who sign up to all the new social media sites (for a fee), so that these sites reach tipping point for critical mass. Each phantom could have their own facebook, myspace, digg and stumbleupon account all cross linked to each other.

I've never understood how these online communities reach that critical mass of numbers.

Is it through superior technology, lots of marketing spend or creating a buzz with bloggers?
