I've always been told that it takes 5 points of contact for a consumer to easily remember your name when a need for your services pops up.

Social Media is just another point (or couple points) in the overall marketing plan.

While the complexity of solid social media marketing might require a skilled individual, that person will need to work closely with the marketing managers, PR and Legal departments as well as the Executives to ensure a seamless corporate front.

And please don't say to the intern, "Hey, why don't you start twittering for the company!"

Great post Clint! Thank you!

Eric,

I think you're exactly right that you always have to be thinking about an overall marketing strategy at all times. I understand how tempting it is to get caught up in the latest and newest trends, but you have to make sure you don't do it at the expense of other methods.

This post reminded me of something I saw on Twitter the other day. I can't recall who it was, but someone tweeted, "If you say you're a social media marketer, what did you do before there was social media?" I feel like I see too many people that want to jump into consulting saying that they're social media marketers without realizing that many companies need a whole marketing strategy, not just one that focuses on the fascinating (yet limited) area of social networks.

At the same time, I was also reminded of a short post I wrote almost two months back about email still being the king.

Nice post. It definitely shows overall strategic thinking on your part.
